From working on the tracks of a railroad to selling homes in real estate, it took an incredible amount of determination and dedication to change paths. My life has been defined by hard work and a willingness to navigate through any obstacle to achieve my goals.
Up to this point in my life, I had worked tough manual labor jobs. I worked on the Norfolk Southern Railroad and spent 23 years working on the tracks, but I knew I couldn't retire until I was 66 years old. I was just halfway there, but the work was too hard on my body.
So, at 43, I left that job and went to work in a steel mill, running locomotives. While it was better, I still was looking for a different avenue. I knew I needed to make a change.
My first son was born just one month after I graduated high school. I did what I had to and learned to manage on my own to provide for my family. It wasn't easy, but I did my best and always tried to do the right thing.
I haven't had many role models or support systems in my life. I've had to be self-reliant and driven to achieve what I want. My wife, Debra, has been supportive of me, and my sons are hard workers; I've taught them to go after what they want in life. As my kids got older, I saw a clear opportunity to shift directions in my career.
That's when I turned to real estate. I had always been interested in it, and I loved the idea of helping people find their dream homes. I got my license in July of 2002 while I was still working at the steel mill.
I've lived in this area of Ohio for almost 40 years now, but my journey here started long before that. My dad was an iron worker, and we traveled a lot when I was a kid.
We lived in school buses that my dad had converted into campers and even in mail trucks that he had transformed into living spaces. It was an interesting life, to say the least.
Always being on the move, it wasn't until I was in seventh grade that we finally settled down and found a place to call home.
Looking back, I realize that those early experiences of not having a true sense of home influenced my desire to work in real estate, helping others find their own place to belong.
Once I started working in real estate, I knew I had found my true calling. I quit the steel mill and have been doing real estate ever since. I've weathered market shifts and tough times, but I've always been willing to work hard and persevere. Having only lived in two homes in the last 35 years, I enjoy helping others establish their roots.
Considering the circumstances, I faced early in my life, I am very proud that I was able to provide a great life for my family and raise good, honest kids. I know that everything I've been through has made me who I am today, and I wouldn't change that. I never relied on a handout. Everything I have was a result of my own hard work.
My kids are all grown up now, with families of their own, and I have the privilege of being a grandfather to seven grandkids and five step-grandkids.
My wife and I have been together for 32 years, and although she had to step away from real estate for a while to care for her mother, she's back working with me again.
It's been a journey full of challenges and triumphs, but through it all, I've remained committed to doing what's right and working hard. When I get the chance, I enjoy riding my motorcycle and going on trips. Debra and I enjoy traveling and taking cruises.
I'm proud of my work in real estate, always striving to be honest and upfront with my clients. It's never been about making a quick deal for me; I'd rather lose a deal than compromise my integrity.
As a REALTOR®, it is my priority to ensure my clients are happy with their purchase or sale and to help them get a good deal on their investment.
